On the eve of the cup final game for his U9 team, we thought we’d put our very own David Cheetham in the spotlight. David, a right arm pace bowler is also great with the bat and the solid performer that you always want on your side. In 2019, he was running as our number 2 wicket taker. He is a fabulous teammate and always brings a smile to your face with his bubbly personality and positive attitude. This not only serves him well as a player, but also as a junior coach. He has put a lot of time into training his young side this year and has helped them secure a place in the cup final. This is a fantastic achievement and something we are sure David and his family are extremely proud of.
What is your name and which ORTCC team do you play for?
David Cheetham. I play for the 2nd team
Do you have a nickname and if so, can you explain its significance?
Dave, Our David, DC and of course cheesy.
What sparked your interest in cricket?
When at school, milky said the club where his dad played were starting an U9’s team. He asked a few of us from school to go down and that was it, I’ve played ever since.
Do you have a cricketing superstition, if so, what is it?
After taking my guard, I usually tap my bat down twice as the bowler is running in.
Who is your club cricketing hero?
Would have to say Mr. Steven Tickle. The amount of runs he scored and the longevity of his playing career is amazing.
Who is your favourite professional player?
I would say it has to be between Kohli or Stokes. Both quality players but I do enjoy watching Dawid Malan bat also.
Who is the funniest at the club?
Hard one this as there’s a few people who always make me laugh. I’d have to say either terry or cockers.
Which team-mate is the tidiest in the changing room?
Dave Naylor when I’ve played in the same team as him.
Who is the most humble player you’ve played with?
Dave Naylor, top bloke.
Who has been the biggest influence on you?
Peggy and Lee Martinus coached me as a junior so I would say they taught me the basics with some further development from Andy Brown and Paul Burrows. Also my Dad has to get a mention for the amount of times he’s bowled at me in the garden over the years.
What one tip or piece of advice would you pass on to our juniors?
Enjoy fielding as it’s the most important aspect of cricket especially as you get older. Also to be loud in the field encouraging the bowler etc.
What is your favourite post-match drink?
Can’t beat a cold pint of Moretti from Deano after a win.
What is your favourite food?
Either a steak or a curry.
What is your favourite football team?
Wigan Athletic
What is your favourite away ground?
Colwyn Bay or S&B
What is your favourite band/singer?
Oasis
What would be your t20 theme tune song and why?
Here comes the boom by Nelly. Pumps you up and is an indication of how I bat also haha.
What is your funniest or most memorable moment at ORTCC?
Funniest would be when we played at Leigh last season. Next to the scorebox on the right is the bowling green with some hedges and a decent drop.
Stu was chasing after the ball near the scorebox but he couldn’t stop himself so he had to jump instead of hitting some chairs but having jumped he ended up on top of the bushes with both legs and arms still going like a turtle on it’s back. Everyone on the pitch and around the ground was crying with laughter.
What is your proudest cricketing achievement?
I would say either top scoring for the 1st team in a game against Wigan a couple of seasons ago, as the team was in a bad way losing a lot of wickets for not many runs and it just showed if I put my head on and bat like I can do what was possible.
I would also have to say winning the clubman of the year and coaching my current U9’s team as they are currently unbeaten winning the league and in the Semi final of the cup.
