Last up for our coaches is the amazing Duvindu Tillakaratne!
Duvindu is our overseas pro this year, from Sri Lanka. Cricket runs in his family with Duvindu’s Dad, Hashan Tillakaratne, a World Cup winner and his twin brother, Ravindu, also a professional cricketer.
Duvindu has had a fantastic season with ORTCC so far, with his bowling performances attracting lots of attention in the league. Last month his 15-wicket haul in one weekend earnt him Player of the Month for our 1st team! We are extremely lucky to have him supporting us with our cricket camp this week. It’s going to be awesome!
CAN YOU TELL US A FEW INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT YOURSELF?
I used to be a left arm seamer and then I took up left arm spin when I was 17. Last year I managed to get Ben stokes’s wicket in a 3 day match and I have been part of the srilanka test squad even though I haven’t been able to make my debut yet.
WHEN DID YOU START PLAYING CRICKET?
I started playing cricket when I was 5 years old and my first coach was my grandfather.
WHY DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN CRICKET COACHING?
I have always wanted to be involved in coaching as I like to pass down what I know about the game, particularly when it comes to spin bowling.
WHAT ARE YOU HOPING THE CHILDREN WILL TAKE AWAY FROM THE COACHING SESSIONS?
I believe the kids will learn about the basics of the game also while having a great time.
WHAT IS THE AREA OF CRICKET YOU LIKE TO COACH THE MOST?
Probably spin bowling. I think I have a lot to offer regarding the technical and tactical aspects of it.
WHAT PIECE OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE CHILDREN, BOTH BEFORE AND AFTER THE COACHING SESSIONS?
Just have fun! That’s what cricket is all about.
