Cameron is an experienced, left arm spin bowler. Not only is he great with the ball, Cameron is also an explosive batsman and is known for scoring solid runs at crucial times in a match. This year he has been on the winning side of ORTCC’s Wigan T20 team and has also represented his University at Cricket, helping his team win the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) cricket championship earlier this year. After all this success, we think it’s time to put Cameron ‘In the Spotlight’.
What is your name and which ORTCC team do you play for?
Cameron Sharp. 1st team player
Do you have a nickname and if so, can you explain its significance?
Sharpie, no real significance really just tend to be called that because it rolls of the tongue.
What sparked your interest in cricket?
My dad – he would play on Sundays at our local club when I was really young and I just remember bowling in the nets for hours on end until he finished.
Do you have a cricketing superstition, if so, what is it?
If it’s a close game and we are batting I like to be sat in same spot until the final run is scored.
Who is your club cricketing hero?
Don’t really have one to be honest.
Who is your favourite professional player?
Jason Roy for me – the way he hits the ball is just different level and very entertaining.
Who is the funniest at the club?
Tom Jones – he never fails to make me laugh on and off the pitch especially in fines.
Which team-mate is the tidiest in the changing room?
Dave, has all the gear, anything you need and knows exactly which pocket it would be in.
Who is the most humble player you’ve played with?
Not really sure – played with a lot quality players through the years.
Who has been the biggest influence on you?
My parents have always travelled to come and watch and help me out with my kit so I have to say they’ve helped a lot. But apart from that I’ve pretty much been a lone wolf working out things for myself.
What one tip or piece of advice would you pass on to our juniors?
A couple of things I would say would be to make use of any training session you do, always try to get something out of it be selfish with it, and secondly keep your cool be calm you can only control how you do things.
What is your favourite post-match drink?
Nothing better than a beer after a win!
What is your favourite food?
Too many to list, but my two I can’t choose between is a pizza or a curry.
What is your favourite football team?
Leicester city!!
What is your favourite away ground?
Another tough question, obviously I haven’t played everywhere in the Liverpool comp yet, so hard to judge, but Loughborough university has always produced great games, and Weetwood in Leeds is quality.
What is your favourite band/singer?
Love all type of music – not really fussy. What’s being played, but Drake is my all-time favourite and Kasabian.
What would be your T20 theme tune song and why?
L.S.F by Kasabian, proper hype song.
What is your funniest or most memorable moment at ORTCC?
Tom Jones on the hill, not sure who was bowling but the ball has gone up to him high in the air, everyone thinking this will be an easy catch, the next thing he puts his arms over his head to protect himself, and the ball just lands right next to him, he claims he couldn’t see because of the sun I reckon he just bottled it, but being on the field I couldn’t stop laughing.
What is your proudest cricketing achievement?
A few things come to mind but most recently winning BUCS prem division for Leeds Beckett who had not won it for 9 years or so. Makes it better as well beating Loughborough, who are meant to be the best sporting university 😎
