We think it’s time to put another ORTCC player ‘In the Spotlight’! This player is one of our new stars of the season. Joining our first team at the start of 2021, he has proven himself to be as entertaining off the field as he is on! Bringing lots of experience with him, this player is currently running as our No.1 senior batsman. We really can’t top that, so there’s only one thing left to say. It…is….AMMER TIME!!!
What is your name and which ORTCC team do you play for?
Ammer Mirza
1st Team
Do you have a nickname and if so, can you explain its significance?
Am or Mirza, nothing significant just similar to my name.

Which other cricket clubs have you played for before joining ORTCC?

Do you have a cricketing superstition, if so, what is it?
Yeah, I tend to touch my pads, thigh pad, inner thigh pad, box and helmet before every ball. And always tell myself to watch the ball as the bowler is running in.
Pre match I would have throw-downs which are underarm throws on the full knee height and drive it in to the ground one bounce to the feeder.
Who is your club cricketing hero?
Lee Kennedy and Gary Bolton.
Who is your favourite professional player?
Andrew Symonds, Mohammed Yusuf, Naeem Ashraf and Zahoor Elahi.
Who is the funniest at the club?
Andy Baybutt.
Which team-mate is the tidiest in the changing room?
Nails (David Naylor).
Who is the most humble player you’ve played with?
Neil Cordingly.
Who has been the biggest influence on you?
Naeem Ashraf.
What one tip or piece of advice would you pass on to our juniors?
Batters. Don’t worry too much on technique just get use to hitting balls and knowing your scoring areas and to pick the right ball for your scoring shots. Look to play straight and controlled early on and play yourself in and trust your ability.
Bowlers, look to bowl dot balls. This will get you in to a good rhythm and the captain can set a field which makes everyone happy. Batsman will look to put you off your lines which can cause mistakes and create wicket taking opportunities.
All in all just enjoy your cricket and enjoy the time on the field with your mates.
What is your favourite post-match drink?
A cuppa tea.
What is your favourite food?
Chicken and Mr Kipling’s Viennese Whirls.
What is your favourite football team?
Manchester United.
What is your favourite away ground?
Wallasey CC.
What is your favourite band/singer?
I have a few and they are always changing too:
Sleeping at Last
Noah Gunderson
Metallica
System Of A Down
What would be your T20 theme tune song and why?
MC Hammer, U Can’t touch this. Because it is Ammer Time.
What is your funniest or most memorable moment at ORTCC?
My running in between the wickets is probably the funniest thing so far as it happened two weeks in a row.
What is your proudest cricketing achievement?
My first ever ball bowling med spin and bowled the batter middle stump. Was a glorious day against Clitheroe!
