THE MYSTERY PERSON AT THE CLUB IS:
Steve (Tick) Tickle
Well done to those of you who guessed the correct person. Tick is pictured here with his granddaughter, Hallie. Tick’s facts are really fantastic. We have so much history and talent at the club, this is a great read!
Clue no.1 – YOU COULD LEARN A LOT FROM ME.
You wouldn’t want to work with me. I taught in St Helens for my whole career. I taught in 3 schools and all of them were closed. I never got a leaving present.
Clue no.2 – I WENT TO SCHOOL WITH A POW.
In my class at school was a former POW. His name was Jeff Glover. He was in the RAF during the Falklands War and was shot down and captured. He was the only POW during that conflict. He later became one of the Red Arrow pilots. The picture here is of my class. I am middle row, 4th from left. Jeff is front row, second from left.
Clue no.3 – I HAVE SHARED A BATH WITH A KNIGHT OF THE REALM
When I was at Loughborough Colleges I played in the same rugby team as sir Clive Woodward – England RU Coach when they won the Rugby World Cup. In those days all players got in the same bath after a game. Not allowed nowadays.
4. I HAVE BEEN IN THE BACK OF A RELIANT ROBIN WITH AN OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST
Again, whilst at Loughborough. I was good friends with Nick Cousins, brother of Robin Cousins who won Olympic Gold at the 1980 Winter Olympics. Robin came to visit Nick at one point and we shared a ride in someone else’s Robin Reliant car.
5. YOU MIGHT THINK I’M SEXY
Another family member has toured on stage with Rod Stewart. My other daughter Jessica is a member of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. She plays the violin and viola. Rod needed some string players to accompany him on tour and Jess was lucky enough to be chosen.
6. A FAMILY MEMBER IS A WORLD RECORD HOLDER
My eldest daughter Katy is a keen netballer and has been since she attended Up Holland High and Winstanley College. A few years ago one of her team mates was diagnosed with cancer and her team decided to do a sponsored 60 hour non-stop netball game to raise money. The effort got them into the Guinness Book of World records.
7. I HAVE REPRESENTED MY COUNTY 3 TIMES
I played RU for Lancashire, RL for Cumbria and Cricket for Lancashire Over 60s.
8. EVERYONE KNOWS YOUR NAME, WHEN YOU’RE STANDING IN THE HALL OF FAME
I played RL for Barrow for 11 years and when I finished there I was inaugurated into their Hall of Fame.
9. MY WINNING CRICKET SHOT IS THE SWEEP
Over my time at ORTCC I have organised and sometimes won many sweepstakes for various sporting events.
10. I USED TO BE A SWEEPER, BUT NOW I’M A SWINGER
Nowadays I am more of a swinger. I retired from playing cricket at the end of the 2020 season and I have joined Houghwood Golf Club to play golf.
