Who works at a club like Orrell? Next up is our Club Secretary, Steve Tickle.
How long have you been Secretary of Orrell CC?
Since the AGM in November 2019.
What duties do you undertake as part of your role?
Receiving information from Liverpool comp and ECB – disseminating said information to relevant club officials. Arranging committee meetings, setting agenda, and providing minutes of those meetings.
I also organise the 100 club which has 3 cash prizes per year – anyone can join.
For many years I have also organised the bonus ball money maker as well, both of which help keep the club ticking over financially.
What is your day job?
I am a retired teacher. I taught in St Helens (God’s country) for nearly 40 years but now that I live in Wigan, I consider myself a missionary worker trying to convert the pie eaters!
What sparked your interest in cricket?
I have played cricket since I was at junior school (a long time ago). I played throughout secondary school and then started playing club cricket in the 70s. I played at St Helens CC and then St Helens Recs CC until 1990 when Dave Brighouse suggested I join ORTCC and I have been here ever since and loved every minute of it.
Describe your favourite thing about ORTCC?
The welcoming atmosphere that everyone notices when they come to the club. There are some real characters and whenever I am there, I can guarantee there is someone to have a grump with.
If there was one thing you could change about the club, what would it be?
Would love to have our own second ground with the necessary facilities to go with it.
Do you have a favourite cricketing line/phrase? if so, what is it?
You can’t score runs in the shed!
If you have been a player, or are still playing – bowler or batter?
Opening bat who has been known to turn his arm over.
Who is your all-time favourite professional cricketer?
In my early days it was Graham Gooch but now I would have to say Jimmy Anderson.
What is your favourite cricket ground?
ORTCC.
What is your favourite football team?
Liverpool.
What is your favourite food?
A good old English Breakfast with BROWN sauce!
Who is your favourite band/singer?
Difficult one – there have been so many but probably Supertramp closely followed by Genesis.
What is your favourite film?
Shawshank Redemption – such a great story.
What one tip or piece of advice would you pass on to the club players?
Enjoy fielding because that’s the part of the game that you will do most if you play for any length of time.
What is your most memorable, or funniest moment at the club?
Watching Stephen Pegg take on Mrs Littleton in a drinking competition. It wasn’t a pleasant sight.
What is your proudest moment at the club?
Being invited to become a Life Member but also umpiring an U11 game when my daughter, Jessica, took a caught and bowled against Highfield.
